Abstract

The aim of this research is to discover the existence, the average level, and the most common type of foreign language speaking anxiety on college students. The approach of this research is quantitative. The research is conducted at the English Education Department of Universitas Negeri Manado. The population of the respondents of this research is the 6th semester students of the English Education Department of Universitas Negeri Manado. The sample consists of 20 respondents of the 6th semester students chosen using the random sampling process. The research instrument that the writers use in this study is the Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety Scale (FLSAS). The finding of this research shows that all of the respondents have experienced symptoms of speaking anxiety and have an average level of 90,3 for speaking anxiety. It is also found that the cause for foreign language speaking anxiety on most of the students is test anxiety. The result of the research suggests that the 6th semester students of the English Education Department of Universitas Negeri Manado have speaking anxiety with an average level of Moderate, and the most common type of speaking anxiety was Test Anxiety.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the readability level of the revised version of the English textbook titled “When English Rings a Bell in Junior High School”, the aim of doing this research is to make sure the reading texts are appropriate for the student’s level of reading. In this study, students have a problem to comprehend the text well. This study use quantitative approach as the research design in this study. The data was collected using Flesch’s Reading Ease Formula. The results of the research shows that 2 texts selected from 15 texts are appropriate for the Seventh Grade of Junior High School at a “Fairly Easy” Level. There are 6 texts suitable for the fifth grade students, 4 texts suitable for sixth grade students, 3 texts suitable for eight grade students and only two reading texts appropriate for the seventh grade of Junior High School.

Abstract

This research is conducted at the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Manado in the academic year of 2020-2021. It aims to find out the effectiveness of skimming-scanning techniques in improving students’ reading comprehension. The researchers choose descriptive text in this research. The researchers take one class consists of 29 students as the sample. To reach the objective of this research, the researchers employ pre-experimental design for one class consists of pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The whole procedure isconducted via online due to the pandemic era. The researchers use several formulas such as mean score formula, standard deviation formula, and t-score formula to calculate the result. The mean score of pre-test is 68.79 and the mean score of post-test is 84.48. The hypothesis of this research shows that the t-score is higher than the t-table which means that there is an improvement in students’ reading comprehension after they got the treatment. According to the results, the researchers try to draw a conclusion that the use of skimming-scanningtechniques is effective in improving students’ reading comprehension and these two techniques are proper to be applied in the learning process.

Abstract

This research aims at identifying euphemisms as figurative language and explain their types and functions in CNN Online Newspaper. This research applied descriptive method. In the data gathering, this study applied purposive sampling technique. The subject of this research was nine news items published in CNN official site with time range of July 2021. Based on the findings, the most frequent type of euphemism used by the news writer was negative euphemisms with eleven data (55%) and the least type was positive euphemism with nine data (45%). This shows the commonness of figurative language use in social life especially in online media as public scope. From the entire news data, several news contain more than two and more euphemisms and the rest have less than two euphemisms. Since figurative language especially euphemism is effective for maintaining harmonious social relationship language users, the use of euphemistic expressions are highly recommended for any purpose as professionals especially lecturers and students as well as language users.
